Short answer

Yes, light brown, medium brown and dark brown poop are all normal. The shade depends on your diet, how long stool stayed in your gut, and how much bile it picked up. Brown becomes a concern only if it turns very pale, clay-colored or white, or black and tarry.

Why is stool brown?

Bile pigments from your liver are changed by gut bacteria into brown compounds as stool moves through your intestines. That is why healthy stool is brown, and why most color changes point to food, speed of digestion, or bile.

What do different shades of brown stool mean?

Light brown, medium brown and dark brown stool are all usually within the normal range. Very pale or nearly black stool is not.

Shades of brown stool
ShadeWhat it usually means
Light brown or tanNormal. Often follows diet, such as more dairy or fat, or quicker transit.
Medium brownThe typical healthy color.
Dark brownNormal. Common with slower transit, coffee, chocolate, red meat, or iron-rich foods.
Very dark, nearly blackCould be iron or bismuth, or bleeding. See black stool.
Very light, gray or whiteNot the usual light brown. See pale or clay-colored stool.

Is light brown poop normal?

Light brown or tan stool is usually normal if it is still clearly brown. A change toward light brown can follow a high-fat meal, a diet change, or loose stool. If stool is getting paler over days, or looks gray or clay-colored, see a clinician.

Is dark brown poop normal?

Dark brown stool is usually normal. Stool that stays longer in the colon loses more water and gets darker. Iron supplements, dark foods and coffee can deepen the color. If stool looks black, sticky and tar-like, or you see maroon blood, that is a different problem.

When is brown stool a concern?

Brown is usually a reassuring color, but color is only one clue. Brown stool with blood, severe pain, a lasting change in bowel habits, weight loss or fever should still be checked. Use the Bristol stool chart to judge shape.
